Born in the UK

WHFS worked with City University on research into the maternity and postnatal care needs amongst UK born ethnic minority communities. Most research to date has focused on the experiences of migrant women during pregnancy. This research explored the experiences of UK born women of Pakistani, Indian, Black Caribbean, Black African, Bangladeshi and Irish parentage during pregnancy, at birth and when caring for their new babies. It also explored the perceptions of maternity health care professionals who cared for women from these backgrounds. The research threw up differing views between professionals and parents but did indicated that some ethnic groups have poorer maternity outcomes than the White population and face additional barriers to accessing care.
