Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme

WHFS, as part of the Tower Hamlets Healthy Borough Programme has developed a scheme to provide information, support and accreditation to at least 80 local businesses and other public venues in Tower Hamlets to enable them to become Breastfeeding Welcome. The project began in October 2009 and since that time has:

  • Involved Tower Hamlets mothers in the development of the scheme through consultation with over 200 mothers. 90% of mothers said they would exclusively breastfeed their babies if private areas were created in the community. Their feedback was used to identify the minimum and maximum requirement a public venues or local businesses can offer those mothers before they consider using these facility Promoted the scheme and the benefits of breastfeeding by attending different community events and activities especially with minority ethnic parents.
  • Approach community organisations, businesses, and public venues to assess interest and map public venues across Tower Hamlets including cafes, hairdressers, restaurants and venues accredited by the Tower Hamlets Healthy Food Award Networked with all relevant agencies involved in delivery of scheme in Tower Hamlets such as Healthy Boroughs, Healthy Food Choices, Tower Hamlets Breastfeeding Strategy group and nationally with the Access All Areas campaign for breastfeeding when out and about.
  • Become an early adopter of the national Breastfeeding Manifesto “Access All Areas” initiative.
