Somali Elder’s Health Project
This is a new project funded by LBTH Adult Services whose aim is to provide a choice of health activities for both older Somali men and women which will support elders to stay healthy and active and thus aim to improve the quality of their lives. Whilst respecting cultural parameters, the approach will look to encourage older Somali men and women to share resources, so that support and expertise can be shared more beneficially and users can gain from sharing ideas, feel more empowered through mutual support and develop a shared voice.
By introducing the idea of healthier alternatives to diet, dealing with physical problems and coping with isolation and exclusion in their lives it is hoped that Somali elders participating in the project will be more likely to want to participate in existing similar services in the borough. We will be introducing more activities taking advantage of local sports facilites such as swimming and walking and more centre based activites such as healthy cooking and creating a vegetable garden.
Many Somali people as they get older are less motivated to leave their homes and take part in outside activities. We aim to actively encourage those that find this more difficult for whatever reason and to set up a refferal system with Adult Services, Primary Care GPs and District Nurses and Somali sheltered housing schemes so elders can be visited and told more about the project before they choose to come along.
