Vitamin D Project Update

As part of the local Vitamin D Health Needs Assessment NHS Tower Hamlets Public Health sought to appoint a community based organisation to design, deliver and analyse an outreach project to determine the awareness of the benefits of vitamin D and the Healthy Start Scheme in Tower Hamlets, in order to improve the uptake of the scheme, and ultimately the nutritional status of the target women and their children.
Women's Health and Family Services (WHFS) a well-established local community voluntary organisation was commissioned to carry out this piece of work, with John Eversley providing academic research support.

The objectives were to:

  • Gain an understanding of the knowledge amongst the target group of women, pregnant women and mums with children under 4 who are Tower Hamlets residents (including a representative sample from the Black and Muslim community identified most at risk from Vitamin D deficiency) about vitamins, supplements, specifically the actions and benefits of vitamin D and the effects of lack of Vitamin D on mothers and babies.
  • Gain an understanding of current awareness of the Healthy Start Scheme in Tower Hamlets.
  • Gain insight into experiences of the Healthy Start Scheme, what has worked well and what improvements could be made and make recommendations for any changes.
